Harford County has more good outdoor space than most owners realize. A few favorites among our staff and clients.
Rocks State Park.
About 30 minutes northwest of Bel Air. Trails through woods and along the Deer Creek waterway. Good for dogs comfortable on a long line and reliable on recall. The terrain is varied and the parking lots fill up on weekends.
Gunpowder Falls State Park.
Multiple access points. Big enough to disappear into. Trails of varying difficulty. Plan for a real outing, not a quick walk. Dogs on leash by Maryland State Parks rules.
Harford Glen Park.
Bel Air-adjacent, lower commitment. A good fit for a dog who needs movement but is not ready for a half-day hike. Quieter than the state parks during the week.
Swan Harbor Farm.
On the water, near Havre de Grace. Open spaces, flat terrain, scenic. A good off-the-beaten-path option when the state parks feel busy.
Before you go.
If your dog is not reliable on a leash, work on it before you commit to a public space. Our private lessons spend significant time on loose-leash and recall, and many of our owners cite trail behavior as the reason they signed up.
